A Great Start to a New Life

January 9, 2008

Since I’m waking up at 3:30 am these days, I decided at 6:30 to go for a run along the boardwalk to familiarize myself with the streets during daylight hours. Awesome! Mailbu is up the coast, the pier is just down the street, and the ocean is RIGHT THERE. Then the most exciting thing happened: on my way back home I discovered a farmer’s market right in the middle of town! I must’ve looked as though I stepped off the short bus as I wandered through the stalls, smiling like the village idiot (much like Rose from The Golden Girls). I was impressed with the organic foods… the unique fruits and veggies, and then I saw the “Raw Dairy Products” table. Apparently it’s completely legal to sell raw milk in California and quite honestly, it doesn’t bother me. One of my best friends grew up on a goat farm and some random neighbor liked the milk straight from the teat. Warm. Foamy. And with raisins. People are weird. So whatever but in addition to selling raw milk, these good folks were also selling fresh bottled colostrum. Um, and why is that? I don’t even want to know who buys it or drinks it besides a 3 day-old baby.

I also successfully avoided a $50 ticket so I’m pleased but cautious as I just know one of these days I’ll forget about the street cleaning days/hours. I wonder if they tow in addition to issuing a citation? In an attempt to make good on not complaining about any type of butt exercise, I’ve located several staircases that make their way to the beach. We will bond over the coming months.

This afternoon found me searching for the Post Office and then winding my way along the shopping promenade. I picked up an US magazine and low and behold found out that the area has been the sight for many a celebrity. No, I have not seen any famous people (I don’t think Nicole Ritchie and her fiancee count) but I did see a homeless man take care of some business in Barnes & Noble and I think I’ll be staying out of the magazine section for a while. I promise I will NOT turn this blog into a celebrity sighting brigade. It’s just an odd thing to pick up your dry cleaning or drop off mail and run into someone you were drooling over in a movie the night before. I suppose that’s an incentive to always wear make up but since I didn’t even comb my hair this morning, I’m pretty sure keeping up the beauty queen facade is beyond me.

sounds like you are really enjoying the life on the west coast. I am glad everything is working out for you too, I could go for a good market for fresh produce, but sadly it just doesnt exist.

Hey, if I lived there, I might start running in the morning again!

Sounds wonderful. But, you never do know who you might run into in those types of situations in that dynamic environment. I make sure I have it “all together” before I step outside in the morning. A person might run into their future boss, spouse, investor…former boss, former spouse, investor…many times I have gone out without “putting my A-game together” and ran into someone whom I wished I had showered, shaved, etc. prior to seeing…and that’s living in the relatively dull and boring Philly suburbs!

Wow–the homeless man IN the book store! I’ve seen many a homeless man relieve themselves on many a building (i had a habit of turning them into my building’s security guards), but never IN a building. REMARKABLE.
