One for the Gipper
May 9, 2008
I am not a Republican. I’m just putting that out that in case you were ever in doubt. I am, however, a respecter of history and politics and will attend various events just to broaden my scope. Today was a visit to the Ronald Regan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The view is magnificent and the architecture aesthetically beautiful. I liked the 80s… good times. It was the ME generation and decade; I didn’t worry about too much and was pretty happy. So despite not revering Reagan as the Republican’s Messiah, he was a decent president who oversaw my teenage years.
Quite a bit happened in the 80s… sadly, the library was lacking in documentation of events such as meetings with Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher. Instead there was an impressive display of boots and belt buckles as well as dozens of Nancy’s designer dresses, table settings, and movie posters. I shouldn’t be surprised… the 80s lacked substance, so why not the presidential library? I was impressed, however, by Air Force One. VERY cool.

I always remember the line in ‘Back to the Future’:
‘Who’s the President, then?’
‘Ronald Reagan’
‘And, who’s the Vice-President? Bonzo the Chimp?’
I felt so sorry for the poor guy in his later years; they say towards the end, he didn,t remember that he was once POTUS.
But, sports reporter turned actor turned politician … I’d say he had a bit more upstairs than a lot of people gave him credit for.

Back to the Future is one of all time favorites and I remember my dad laughing pretty hard during that exchange. I realized while visiting the museum that he was a pretty decent guy and you’re right… he was smarter than most people believed. Maybe I should blame the library designers for the lack of substance rather than the Gipper himself. This does not mean I’m a Republican.
P.S. Winston Churchill is one of my heroes.

It is unfortunate his later years were not as kind to him and his loved ones as they could have been, but when he passed I was struck by the intensity and outpouring of affection displayed at his services. Quite a lifetime of achievement, full and diverse.

>>P.S. Winston Churchill is one of my heroes.<<
Bessie Braddock, MP: ‘Winston, you’re drunk!’
Churchill: ‘Bessie, you’re ugly. But, I’ll be sober in the morning!’
Lady Astor: ‘If you were my husband, I’d poison your coffee’
Churchill: ‘Madam, if you were my wife, I’d drink it’
Really, he was a racist, sexist, xenophobic old curmudgeon … but, in his day, you could get away with that sort of thing, and everyone still worshipped him.

Wow, was that the Airforce One Lyndon Johnson was sworn into office on? That picture with Jackie O standing next to him always gives me goosebumps. How awful that was.

Good post. My favorite president. Gosh. Could have sworn you were a Republican.
Sike!
Like that 80’s reference?
